Imagine jumping into a freezing cold river while it s snowing, to carry out a rescue mission . well, that was the reality for a Californian FedEx Express driver on Monday.
The reason? A woman who took a moment to send a birthday message to a relative, found herself in a spot of trouble when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the Truckee River near Alpine Meadows.
The FedEx Express driver noticed that the driver in front of him was weaving in and out of the lane and then veered off the road into the river below.

Residents of Te Herekiekie St, Tūrangi, will be treated on Saturday, March 13 to a double celebration the launch of a children s picture book set in the 2004 Tongariro River flood, and the 100th birthday of the truck featured in the story.
Old Truck and the Flood is told from the viewpoint of Old Truck , a 1921 Model 10 Republic, trapped by the floodwaters in a garage on Te Herekiekie St.
The flood in February 2004 caused the Tongariro River to burst its banks at Te Herekiekie St, Tūrangi, with residents evacuated and an estimated 30 homes in the street inundated by floodwaters. Stopbanks were later constructed between the street end and the river.

He decided to do something about it and set up a group of volunteers called Rena Mälaren, meaning clean lake Mälaren in Swedish. Their aim is to remove toxins from the lake and the Baltic Sea while encouraging people not to treat these fragile ecosystems as a rubbish dump.
